So if you’re not on my facebook you may not know this but…

Myself and my good friend and now business partner Alain Sleigher have started up a new company that is doing all the photography for Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing.

Today was my first day out and it was as good as it gets – sunny blue bird with good stability! Here are a couple bangers from the day for you to enjoy!

Cheers,

Dan

It’s shreddin time again

So..

What have I been up to lately? Shreddin the gnar sans camera.. I know I know I should be riding with my camera but I figured I should try and ride hard to get it out of my system for a bit so I can concentrate on shooting a bit more..

Actually today I took my camera out for 1.5 runs for the official season’s opening of RMR..

Here’s a shot of Nova Scotian Emily Ernst.

Enjoy.

La Paz Panoramic

We’re back home in Revelstoke now. Home sweet home. I’m getting the chance here and there to go through some photos that I wasn’t able to edit before because I needed more powerful software that would be too painfully slow to use on the netbook.

Here’s a panoramic shot of La Paz, Bolivia.

Cholitas Wrestling

Cholitas-13
While in La Paz, there was an advertisement at our hostal to check out some Cholitas Wresting. Cholitas are the traditionally dressed Bolivian women with brightly coloured dresses and bowler hats.

We couldn’t resist and had to check out the madness. It was a lot of fun and I believe Alison dubbed it to be cheesier than the free Chizitos that was included in the admission price!

La Paz and the Jungle

Bolivia-12
We left Cuzco, Peru on a night bus to La Paz, Bolivia. The next morning, we drove past Lake Titicaca and saw flamingoes chillin’ on shore, which surprised me because it was cold, brown and not at all how I imagined flamingo habitat.  When we arrived at the border, it looked more like a market than anything. People were just walking back and forth from country to country with bags of coca leaves, peanuts, oranges etc. It was hilarious because the immigration offices were in the weirdest locations. Some of the locals kindly pointed us in the right direction: around the block and into some building with no sign, then across the bridge etc. Very wacky.

La Paz Downhill

Vertigo-8

When we made it into La Paz, a big stop for Alison and I was to go mountain biking on the infamous “world’s most dangerous road.” The trip is supposed to be 3000m of vertical down a road that in places can be as wide as a single car lane. Add in some gnarly cliffs, traffic, and high speed and you get a recipe for disaster if you are inexperienced. After consulting with some experienced bikers we found out that because of these factors, it’s more like the world’s safest bike ride down the world’s most dangerous road. Alison and I were more looking for the style of riding that we were used to in Canada – ripping some downhill single track shuttle runs, but with a Bolivian twist.

Cuzco and Machu Picchu

MachuPicchu-14
When we arrived in Cuzco, it took us a while to find a hostal. Some were too expensive, some were just not what we wanted and some were just plain sketchy, like the one where we were greeted by three men and three dogs all circling around us and giving us different answers to the same questions at the same time (the men, not the dogs). After a long search, we ended up at a beautiful Israeli hostal that was just about as close as you could get to the city’s main attractions. It was clean and quiet with internet, breakfast and our own room with three comfy beds, the nicest pillows we’ve seen over our whole trip, a balcony and our own bathroom that even had hot water….but when we tried to pay, we were politely informed that the quoted price was in $USD and not Peruvian Soles. Good thing we had already Skyped our mammas and taken our hot showers cause we were outta there!

Arequipa and the Colca Canyon

ArequipColca-33
After another sleep on another bus, we arrived in Arequipa: Peru’s second largest city. Because we had other plans, we didn’t spend much time there, but what we did see was beautiful. Arequipa is another colonial city overflowing with wonderful architecture and interesting people. My favourite Arequipa experience was at the Plaza Des Armas (fancy town square usually surrounded by beautiful buildings etc.) where a woman was selling bags of bird seed for about $0.18. I bought a bag and almost immediately found my hand overflowing with pigeons. When the birds started to get a little too feisty for my liking, I gave the rest of the seed to Dan who then gave it to a couple of little girls and watched them get swarmed. Very funny! Afterwards, we went to Monasterio San Francisco (a big old monastery that is now more or less a museum). Dan thought it was cool, but I thought all the dark little rooms and confession boxes and bloody portraits etc were creepy, creepy and more creepy.

People of Arequipa and the Colca Canyon

PeopleColca-4

We have been pretty busy! This past week we were in Arequipa, Peru as well as trekking in the Colca Canyon. Unfortunately we haven’t had the chance to write about our experiences yet, but I was able to do a quick edit of all my favourite shots of some of the people from those areas.
